A Partial History

From 1893 to 1954

Two years after the Civil War, four ministers from different parts of Texas met under a large oak tree in Wheatville, Texas (at what is now the corner of 25th and Leon Streets in West Campus near The University of Texas at Austin). They agreed to divide Texas into four divisions of associations.

From 1954 to 2022

After paying off debt, Rev. Black used the remains of proceeds to purchase the current 3.5 acre site on Blessing Avenue, several miles to the north-west of the original 350 acres, to build a modern Tabernacle. This building enabled the Association to continue its mission of supporting the Black community of Central Texas. The construction cost $500,000.

2023 and the Future

Without a regular congregation, it fell upon the larger local churches to pay for maintainence and upkeep. This worked adequately until the COVID pandemic.
